PCB Clearance and Approval in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is responsible for regulating industries, businesses, and healthcare facilities to ensure compliance with environmental laws and pollution control norms. Types of PCB Clearances & Approvals

1. Consent to Establish (CTE)

2. Consent to Operate (CTO)

After obtaining CTE and completing construction, industries must apply for CTO before starting operations.

CTO is issued for a fixed period and must be renewed periodically.

3. Hazardous Waste Authorization (HWA)

Required for industries generating hazardous waste (e.g., chemicals, solvents, e-waste, etc.).
Industries must have a proper hazardous waste management system, including safe storage, transportation, and disposal through TNPCB-authorized waste handlers.
Periodic compliance reports must be submitted to TNPCB.

4. Biomedical Waste Authorization (BMW)

Mandatory for hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and veterinary facilities handling biomedical waste.
Healthcare units must segregate, store, and dispose of biomedical waste through TNPCB-approved common treatment facilities (CBMWTFs).
Annual compliance reports must be submitted.

Approval Process for TNPCB Clearances

1. Online Application – Submit the required documents and application through the TNPCB
Online Portal (www.tnpcb.gov.in).

2. Site Inspection & Verification – TNPCB officials inspect the premises for environmental
compliance.
3. Approval or Recommendations – If all conditions are met, the clearance is granted. If
deficiencies are found, the applicant must rectify them before approval.
4. Renewal & Monitoring – Industries must renew CTO, HWA, and BMW authorizations
periodically and submit compliance reports.
