CEIG Approval in Tamil Nadu

The Chief Electrical Inspectorate to Government (CEIG) in Tamil Nadu is responsible for ensuring electrical safety, compliance, and approval for high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) electrical installations in industries, commercial buildings, and other establishments. Before commissioning electrical installations, obtaining CEIG approval is mandatory to ensure adherence to safety regulations under the Tamil Nadu Electricity Act and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) regulations.

Process for CEIG Approval in Tamil Nadu

1. Application Submission
  • The owner or electrical contractor must apply to CEIG (Electrical Inspectorate) with relevant documents, including the electrical layout, load details, and safety measures.
  • Applications can be submitted online via the Tamil Nadu Electrical Inspectorate Portal or physically at the CEIG office.

2. Verification & Inspection
  • The CEIG inspects the electrical installations, switchgear, transformers, earthing systems, and safety protocols before granting approval.
  • If any modifications are required, the applicant must rectify them before reinspection.

3. Approval & Certification
  • After successful verification, CEIG issues the safety clearance certificate, allowing the connection of electrical power supply from TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation).

HT & LT Electrical Connections in Tamil Nadu

1. High Tension (HT) Connection
  • HT connections are required for industrial and large commercial establishments with a connected load exceeding 112 kW (150 HP).
  • These connections operate at 11 kV, 22 kV, or 33 kV voltage levels.
  • The HT consumer must get CEIG approval before commissioning transformers and high-voltage equipment.
  • Periodic inspections are required to ensure compliance with safety standards.

2. Low Tension (LT) Connection
  • LT connections are for small industries, domestic, and commercial purposes where the connected load is below 112 kW (150 HP).
  • These operate at 230V (single-phase) or 415V (three-phase) supply levels.
  • While LT consumers do not require CEIG approval, electrical safety compliance and proper wiring certifications are mandatory.

Note

  • HT consumers must obtain CEIG approval before energizing their electrical installations to ensure safety and avoid penalties.
  • LT consumers should ensure compliance with Tamil Nadu Electrical Safety Rules but do not require CEIG approval unless dealing with specific high-risk electrical installations (e.g., hazardous locations).
  • Failure to obtain CEIG approval for HT connections can lead to disconnection or legal action under the Tamil Nadu Electricity Rules.
By following these guidelines, industries and businesses can ensure a safe and legally compliant electrical setup in Tamil Nadu.
